The inscriptions on two variants of this portrait form the basis for the date. One reads, “To Marie Rapp / 1914 / 291 / Alfred Stieglitz” (location unknown, see Christie’s, New York, auction catalogue, 31 October 1989, lot 90), and the other “To Marie Rapp / June—1914 / ‘291’” (location unknown, see Sotheby’s, New York, auction catalogue, 15–16 October 1992, lot 204).
