Artist, American, 1864 - 1946

The image displays a close-up view of a person's upper body, primarily focusing on their face. The individual is captured at an angle, with their head slightly tilted, and both hands are raised, subtly touching their hair on either side. They have delicate facial features with prominent eyes and a relaxed expression. Their hair is cut short, framing their face. The person is wearing a garment with a dark collar, but the details of the clothing are largely obscured due to the close framing of the image. No jewelry or objects are visible due to the tight composition. The background is out of focus, presenting a neutral, soft texture that does not provide specific context or objects.

Remarks

Margaret Treadwell was a friend of Stieglitz’s niece Georgia Engelhard.

“This morning I photographed Margaret Treadwell, the successor here of Connie Garland.—I did pretty well.—One rather fine thing. I guess I have really learnt much in the last few years” (Stieglitz to Herbert Seligmann, 29 August 1921 [YCAL]).
