Several portraits of Ida O’Keeffe standing next to her long underwear are at Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University, New Haven (YCAL MSS 85, box 148, folder 2747), one inscribed: Who is this maiden fair? / And why is she smiling? / May be she sees a bird—/ may be it’s just a photo- / graphic smile—/ Who is this maiden / with the raven hair? / What is hanging on the line?—/ Nothing—oh nothing / is hanging on the line—/ except a Smile—/ 1924/25 / Lake George. The other is inscribed: In Union / there is / Strength / and / A Smile.
