The image shows a partial figure of a man from the head to the knees standing and leaning slightly forward with one hand on an open book on a table or altar. The man has a beard and is looking at the book. He has short, somewhat unkempt hair, and is draped in a piece of fabric, leaving his upper torso uncovered. Next to the book on the table are a crucifix and a burning candle. In the background is an archway revealing a distant landscape with hills and a small structure or village visible. A lion lies at the man's feet behind the table. The scene is set indoors, indicated by the arched frame and the textures of stone and foliage.
