Scholarly Remarks and Key Set Data

Remarks

This photograph and Key Set numbers 1622 and 1623 are dated by the construction of a hospital on Welfare Island (now Roosevelt Island). A photograph by P. L. Sperr, dated 1 July 1937 (see Photographic Views of New York, 1870s–1970s, no. 1369.C3), shows the construction of the hospital at a stage similar to that of these three photographs. As Stieglitz left for Lake George in late June, the photographs must have been made in May or June 1937. The titles are based on those of similar works included in Stieglitz’s 1934 exhibition at An American Place.
