This is a portrait of a man shown from the waist up, seated and facing slightly to his right. He has distinct facial features, including a prominent beard and mustache, and curly hair that frames his face. The man's left hand rests on his waist. He is wearing a richly patterned garment with an elaborate lace ruff around his neck, a cloak or mantle draped over his shoulders, and a sword at his waist. The background is plain, and the image is bordered by a wide expanse of lightly speckled or foxed paper.
