The image depicts an older man from the waist up, seated and facing slightly to his left. He has a prominent forehead, deep-set eyes, a long, thin nose, short cropped beard and mustache, and closely cropped hair covered by a cap. He is wearing a fur-collared coat over an ornate garment with visible buttons. There is no visible jewelry. The background consists of finely detailed lines and cross-hatching, with no specific elements. At the bottom of the portrait, there is a written inscription identifying the person as Alexander Nowell.
