Orphan Man, Standing

1882

Vincent van Gogh

Artist, Dutch, 1853 - 1890

Printed with black and gray on tan-colored paper, a man wearing military-style clothing and a brimless cap stands holding a stick down by one side in this vertical lithograph. The man’s body is angled to our left, and he looks down and to our left with an unfocused gaze. His brows are gathered, and he has a beak-like nose, high cheekbones, a wide, cleft chin, and his lips are downturned. He has substantial white mutton chops, and his cap flares up to a flat top. His double-breasted vest is buttoned, and his shin-length coat hangs open. His pants are baggy over square-toed shoes. His left hand, to our right, hangs by his side, and the other hand holds the stick like a long sword at rest. The artist signed the print in the lower left corner of the image, “Vincent.” An inscription added below reads “épreuve d’essai.”
