Artist, German, c. 1595 - 1647

The image is a portrait showing the upper body of a man seated and facing forward. His head is slightly turned to his right, looking directly outwards. He has a long, full beard and short hair under a flat black cap; his facial features are marked by a prominent forehead and a serious expression. He is dressed in voluminous garments that appear to be robes, with a white ruff collar and visible long sleeves. In his right hand, he holds a closed book or manuscript. The background is an intricately designed border featuring symbolic imagery and Latin inscriptions, enclosing the figure within a decorative oval frame. The lower part of the image includes some additional scripted text.
