The image shows a man seated with an open book held in front of his chest. He has a long beard, a receding hairline, and is dressed in attire suggestive of a cleric or scholar. The man is framed by an intricate oval design and below the portrait is a heraldic shield with a Latin inscription identifying him as Edmund Grindall. Lines engraved in the background emphasize the oval frame and the subject.
