Artist, French, 1837 - 1911

The image depicts two groups of figures in a dark, shadowy setting. On the left, a person is sitting or crouching, supporting a child who is held in their lap and reaching out to another child who is climbing onto them. The person has tired or downcast facial features and tousled hair. To the right, there are two women; one is seated, embracing a child against her, with her head turned towards the left side of the image. The child, nestled closely to her, appears to be leaning on her lap, their back towards the viewer. Both women wear dresses with full sleeves. The setting around them includes broken pieces of furniture or wooden elements scattered on the ground. The background is densely shaded, suggesting a rocky or cavernous area dimly lit, deepening the contrast between the figures and their surroundings.
