This painting shows a beach on the right with waves gently washing onto the shore from the left. We are looking down at the scene from above, so the horizon is not visible. Slightly above center, a white canoe is positioned horizontally on the sand, its left end at the edge of the water. Two lines of four people are walking on either side of the canoe, appearing to use long beams or rods to move it. One person is in front, walking backwards towards the water, guiding them. The people are small and barely visible, indicated by a few small dots of paint. There are more people scattered along the beach on the right. They all cast long dark shadows behind them on the sand. Some lines of people near the top of the painting appear to be pulling on long ropes that disappear into the water on the left. Other people sit or stand on the sand, some carrying baskets on their heads or shoulders. The sand is a gradient, yellow on the right and becoming brown where it meets the water. The water is mostly light blue, with some darker areas of purple and lines of white surf on the edges of the waves.
