Artist, Scottish, 1876 - 1953

The image shows a waterfront with boats and individuals engaged in various activities. The viewpoint recedes into the distance, with the horizon placed high towards the top of the image where water meets the structures on either side. Boats are visible along the wharf to our right and in the central waterway. The brushstrokes are quick and sketchy, providing an impressionistic feel to the vessels, buildings, and people in the scene. The color palette is monochromatic, with black on white, emphasizing form and line. Closest to us, people are seen strolling along the promenade, while small boats are rowed in the water beyond. Buildings rise on the right, their facades suggested with loose and dynamic strokes, conveying a sense of lively urban activity.
