Gift 1941 from Edith G. Rosenwald to her husband, Lessing J. Rosenwald [1891-1979], Jenkintown, Pennsylvania;[1] gift 1964 to NGA.

[1] According to notes in NGA curatorial files. Lessing Rosenwald's fiftieth birthday was 10 February 1941, and on this occasion he recieved a congratulatory telegram from Olga and Carl Milles (NGA Gallery Archives, Record Group 17b, Rosenwald Collection papers, Box 16 [1941], Misc: Scrapbook [Jan-May 1941]). The head was probably purchased directly from the artist; 1947 and 1950 insurance records in the Rosenwald Collection papers give Mr. Rosenwald's fiftieth birthday as the purchase date. On a list dated 22 February 1943, the sculpture is listed as owned by Robert L. Rosenwald, Lessing Rosenwald's son (NGA Gallery Archives, Record Group 17b, Rosenwald Collection papers, box 23, file: 1943 - Institutions: National Gallery of Art).
