Artist, American, 1870 - 1953

The image shows a scene with a viewpoint from above. The horizon is near the top third, with a large white shape resembling a mountain or iceberg on it, and smaller shapes extending the horizon line. The space is filled with dynamic, swirling lines suggesting waves and water, created with broad, free-flowing brushstrokes. The drawing is done in monochrome using shades of charcoal or dark pencil to create a strong contrast. Close to us, the contours are bold and pronounced, while in the distance, the shapes diminish in intensity. The overall palette uses dark lines against a lighter background to evoke a sense of rhythm and motion.
