Artist, Scottish, 1876 - 1953

The image shows the view from inside an archway looking out towards a garden area. Dark shadows dominate the interior of the archway, framing the view beyond. A sunlit courtyard with intricate foliage on the walls takes up much of the scene, with the horizon obscured by the arch. The brushstroke technique mimics fine etching or engraving, with detailed hatching creating contrast between light and shadow, adding texture and detail to the architectural elements and vegetation. The color palette consists entirely of sepia tones, giving the image a monochrome and vintage effect, emphasizing the play of light and shadow across the composition.
