Painter, Dutch, 1818 - 1897

This painting shows a cobblestone street lined on both sides by buildings and tall green trees. A building with a red-tiled roof and stone walls is visible on the right, partly covered by tree branches. On the left are more buildings with red roofs and white walls, some shorter and some taller. People walk along the stone street. Closest to us, two women are visible carrying baskets, both wearing long dresses or skirts in shades of red and blue with white bonnets covering their hair. In the background, farther down the road, two men stand next to a cart, and two people on the left stand near the entrance to one of the buildings. The sky above is cool blue with a few clouds, and the scene is lit with a warm light. The buildings and trees on the right side of the street cast dark shadows.
