The image shows an elevated view looking down into a canal surrounded by old architecture. There is no distinct horizon visible. The scene is depicted using a printmaking technique known for intricate line work and cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, giving a texture-rich appearance to the walls and structures. The color palette is monochromatic, rendered in varying tones of black, white, and shades of gray. Close to us, there is a railing and structures that seem part of a canal lock or similar mechanism. Beyond, the buildings form narrow façades, with vertically ribbed surfaces and small-paned windows, casting detailed shadows that emphasize the play of light across their surfaces.
