Artwork history & notes
Provenance
Possibly (Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York) by 1966.[1] (Imperial Galleries, Geneva); purchased 22 February 1971 through (Alex Maguy [1906-1999], Galerie de l ‘Elysée, Paris, as agent for Imperial Galleries) by Paul Mellon [1907-1999], Upperville, VA; gift 1985 to NGA.
[1] A letter preserved in the Pierre Matisse Gallery Records at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, dated 23 November, 1966, from Toninelli Arte Moderna Gallery in Milan, Italy, to Pierre Matisse in New York, suggests that Pierre Matisse owned all three existing casts.
