Artist, French, 1847 - 1898

The image features an elevated viewpoint looking over a landscape with a high horizon dividing the sky from the land and water surface. In the distance, there are structures or a cityscape on the horizon. Close by, there is rough terrain with vegetation and a path leading to a solitary cross on a mound. The border includes decorative patterns and figures. The scene is rendered in a monochromatic sepia tone with textured brushstrokes or etching lines giving movement and texture to the sky, ground, and border. The warm browns create a dramatic and somber atmosphere, while the detailed border adds artistry and embellishment.
