Never Again War (Nie Wieder Krieg)

1924

Käthe Kollwitz

Artist, German, 1867 - 1945

Shown from the chest up in the bottom right quadrant of the composition, a person holds one arm straight up with the thumb and first two fingers extended as their hair blows back from their face in this vertical lithograph. On tan-colored paper, the person is printed in tones of gray, as if sketched in charcoal. The mouth is wide open and teeth visible. The person has high cheekbones, heavy, pointed brows, and straight hair. A garment is suggested with long strokes of gray. The hand not raised in the air rests on the person’s chest, and is cut off by the bottom edge of the print. Faintly drawn words in the background are difficult to make out. Small in scale, several clusters of zigzagging lines are in the lower left corner. The artist signed the work in the lower right corner, “Kollwitz.”
