Artist, French, 1837 - 1911

The image shows an older person from the chest up in a hunched stance, facing towards the right side. The person has a prominent nose and furrowed facial features, wearing a hood or headscarf covering much of the hair. They are clothed in a long, flowing garment with pleats or folds, resembling a cloak or robe. Their hands are partially visible, one hand held close to the chest. The setting seems to be indoors with a large upright beam or post extending from the ceiling to the floor next to the person. The background has textured shading, conveying a closed or enclosed space, creating a somber atmosphere.
