Acquired from the artist November 1924 by the estate of John Quinn [1870-1924], New York; (his estate sale, American Art Galleries, New York, 9-12 February 1927, 3rd day, no. 477, as Girl Reading a Letter); (Joseph Brummer [1883-1947], New York); John Quinn's sister, Julia Quinn Anderson; 1934 to her daughter, Mary Anderson [Mrs. Thomas F.] Conroy; 1970 to her husband, Thomas F. Conroy; acquired by 1975 by private collection; sold 1986 through (Davis & Langdale Company Inc., New York) to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, Upperville, Virginia;[1] gift 1994 to NGA.
