Artwork history & notes

Provenance

Possibly Louis Courajod [1841-1896], in 1886; his estate; (his estate sale, Paris, 26 April 1911).[1] Purchased 1991 through (Gian Guido Scarampella) by Mark Wilchusky, New York; gift 1995 to NGA.
[1] The provenance is from the curator's acquisition proposal. The design of this plaquette was illustrated in a standard handbook on Renaissance plaquettes published in 1886. At the time the single known specimen of this type was in the Courajod collection, and it is possible this object is the same one.
