Biography

Lord Caithness was Lord-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria in 1856-1858 and 1859-1866. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of London and devoted much of his leisure to scientific pursuits, including photography. In 1864 photographs by Lord Caithness and William Bambridge were used to illustrate The History of Windsor Great Park and Windsor Forest by William Menzies. Caithness invented a steam carriage for travelling on macadamized roads, a gravitating compass and a tape-loom for use in weaving. In 1877 he published Lectures on Popular and Scientific Subjects, which reached a second edition in 1879.
