Yavno was trained as a documentary photographer at the Photo League in New York. He was hired in 1936 by the Works Project Administration where he worked until 1942, when he began his service in the U.S. Army Air Force. After the war he settled in San Francisco and worked as a freelance documentary and commercial photographer.
