Hiroshi Sugimoto moved from Tokyo to Los Angeles in the early 1970s to enroll in art school; there he absorbed the beliefs of Conceptualism and Minimalism and chose photography as his medium. On moving to New York in 1974, he undertook two series of works: dioramas at the Museum of Natural History and interiors of movie theaters. In 1980 Sugimoto initiated a third series, of seascapes, and since then he has traveled around the world to make images focusing on the meeting of sea and sky.
