Biography

The artist is known only from his medals, which depict obscure sitters from Padua, Treviso, Verona, and Venice. There are eight medals and four attributed pieces. The medalist occasionally misplaced the effigy within the medal roundel, which suggests that he was an amateur, but his simple, direct realism in the portraits is impressive. One medal, Niccolò Vonica of Treviso (George Francis Hill, A Corpus of the Italian Medals of the Renaissance before Cellini, 2 vols., London, 1930: no. 476), is signed FRA AN BRIX ME FECIT, which is the fullest form of signature in the group of medals.

[This is the artist's biography published in the NGA systematic catalogue of Renaissance medals.]
