An abstracted nude man strides forward on long, spindly legs with his arms by his sides in this free-standing bronze sculpture. The man’s limbs are unnaturally thin and elongated with oversized hands and feet. The surface of the sculpture and the narrow, rectangular base is bumpy and rough. His body is angled to our right against a light gray background in this photograph.

Walking Man II

Alberto Giacometti · 1960 · bronze ·  Accession ID  1977.47.7

An abstracted, nude person stands on a platform perched on two wheels, all cast in bronze, which balances on wooden blocks in this freestanding sculpture. The elongated, unnaturally thin woman stands with her arms slightly bent and held out to her sides. She has low-set breasts, and her blocky, oversized feet stand on a metal platform supported on two vertical strips of bronze that perch on the axle. The wheels are oversized with four spokes each arranged to look like Xs. The surface of the woman and wheels are rough and knubby, and all of the metal is colored gold. The wood blocks stand upright with channels cut into their upper surfaces to hold the wheels. The sculpture is angled to our left in this photograph, and it is shown against a pale gray background.

The Chariot

Alberto Giacometti · 1950 · bronze ·  Accession ID  1977.47.2

An abstracted, thin, nude woman with a round face half sits, half leans back against a tall, narrow support in this free-standing bronze sculpture. Her body faces us in this photograph. Her wide, oval face has two stylized, star-like eyes and a triangular opening for a mouth. The torso is tall and thin, and her limbs elongated. With thin arms, she holds up open hands with palms facing each other at the level of her round breasts. Her fingers are long and delicate. She is encased within a tall, rectangular frame. With knees slightly bent and resting against a panel that runs in front of her shins, she leans against a slat against her backside, perhaps the seat to a stylized chair. Her feet are pressed together on a double-tiered, low, square base with four bulbous feet at the corners.

The Invisible Object (Hands Holding the Void)

Alberto Giacometti · model 1934, cast 1935 · bronze ·  Accession ID  1973.27.1

Carved from a slab of white marble, the top surface of this sculpture is covered with shallow, cuplike and deep rectangular depressions of various sizes. We look slightly down onto the slab in this photograph. The surface is divided into three vertical sections, which are defined by incised lines. The cuplike depressions are in the sections to the left and right. Two tiny, carved, dark wooden objects, like game pieces, stand upright in a cup with one the left and one to the right. Each piece is flat with a symmetrical design and a point at the bottom that inserts into the cup. The left piece has a disk flanked by triangular protrusions with a clover shape at top. The second piece has four stacked, small circles, and a U-shaped form to suggest the outline of a person with raised arms. Three smaller but deep rectangular cavities are carved into the middle section, and each one has a lid. Two lids sit askew on the top surface of the board near their respective openings, and inside are additional wooden pieces. A blank, rectangular section outlined with lightly inscised lines in the lower right is carved with reversed script letters that read, “on ne joue plus.” The entire surface has beveled edges, so it sits on a stepped base.

No More Play

Alberto Giacometti · 1931-1932 · marble, wood, and bronze ·  Accession ID  1991.40.1

The sculpture is a bust depicting the upper part of a human figure, focusing on the head and the shoulders. The subject appears to be a woman with an elongated neck, a distinct facial structure with deep eye sockets, prominent cheekbones, and a narrow chin. The hair is styled or sculpted back against the head. The sculpture is crafted from a material that resembles bronze, indicated by its metallic brown and copper hues, with greenish oxidization visible on parts of the surface. The texture is rugged and uneven. The figure is portrayed in an upright posture, holding an authoritative presence.

Bust of Annette IX

Alberto Giacometti · conceived 1964, cast 1966 · bronze ·  Accession ID  2016.44.1

This print depicts three figures composed of abstract shapes and areas of bold color. The central figure is a woman facing forward, her skin and curly hair highlighted by areas of bright blue. Her facial features are abstract, and she wears a long garment colored in bright green. She is holding a vibrant bouquet of flowers made up of black outlines with overlapping circles of red and blue. Behind her, there is an abstract red figure with outstretched arms that appears to be flying in an area of bright yellow. It appears mostly human, but one of its arms looks like a bird's wing. Behind this figure and to the right is the minimal outline of another figure with long legs and no visible arms, who looks down to the right. Aside from the areas of color, the background is plain, yellowed paper. The signature "Marc Chagall" is visible in the top left and bottom left corners. The title "PRINTS FROM THE MOURLOT PRESS" is printed in black in the bottom right corner.

Kneeling Woman

Alberto Giacometti · 1956 · bronze ·  Accession ID  1977.47.5

The image is a sketch showing a partial view of a person's upper body. The person is seated at what appears to be a table, holding an object in their hands, and is positioned facing the viewer. The facial features and hair of the person are roughly outlined, with little detail. The individual is wearing an indiscernible garment. Surrounding the person, there is a sketched background featuring abstract, incomplete shapes that could be elements of a room. The scene is set within a domestic interior, suggested by the presence of furniture-like forms. The sketch is primarily composed of loose pencil strokes on a plain background, with the artist's signature, "Alberto Giacometti," and the year "1954" noted at the bottom right corner.
