Antonio Marescotti
Ferrarese, active 1444/1462
Related Content

Nothing is known of the artist, except that he was working in Ferrara between 1444 and 1462, the dates that appear on his medals. Eight medals are signed by him (of which six are dated), and a further group of six has been attributed to him on stylistic grounds. He produced powerful, individual portrait types and frequently employed handsome classical letterforms in his inscriptions. His career spans the same period as that of Matteo de' Pasti, from whose work this lettering style might be derived.

Medri reports that Marescotti worked as a founder and attributes to him a terracotta bust of Giovanni da Tossignano and the tomb slab of the same person that is in the church of San Girolamo, Ferrara.

[This is the artist's biography that was published in the NGA systematic catalogue of Renaissance medals.]
