Biography

Alice Gardner Barrell was born 1874/1875. On 16 November 1897, she married Luke Vincent Lockwood, with whom she had two children, Luke B. Lockwood, and Dr. Jane Lockwood. Luke Vincent Lockwood was active in the arts: he was president, 1916-1932, of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences; a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, England; honorary life Fellow of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; director of the Fine Arts Association; trustee of the Antiquarian and Landmark Society; and held a number of other positions on committees and boards in the arts. Mrs. Lockwood was a member of the Garden Club of America, and author of Gardens of Colony and State, which traced the history of gardening in the United States. The Lockwoods were collectors of art and antiquities; a sale of their estate was held at Parke-Bernet Galleries in 1954. Luke died on 23 January 1951; Alice on 5 March 1954.
