Biography

Alphonse de Rothschild was the son of James (1792-1868) and grandson of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812) of Frankfort-am-Maine, founder of the Rothschild family, pre-eminant in finance throughout Europe. James' branch of the family operated in Paris, while James' brother Nathan (1777-1836) established the family in London.
