Biography

Mary Sidney Ashe was the daughter of John Ashe (1760-1818), a wealthly South Carolina planter, and his wife Catherine DeVeaux Lechmere. The family lived on a plantation, "The Point," and at 32 South Battery, Charleston. Mary Sidney had a sister, Eliza Barnwell [later Mrs. Philip Livingston] and a brother John Sidney Algernon. Mary Sidney Ashe married Christopher Gadsden. Mary's father John Ashe is the subject of a portrait by Gilbert Stuart, now in the NGA (1942.8.12).
