Biography

Granddaughter of Mary Sidney Ashe (c. 1792-1855), and a descendant of John Ashe (1760-1818), a wealthy South Carolina planter whose portrait attributed to Gilbert Stuart is now in the NGA (1942.8.12). Harriet had a sister Jane Elizabeth (Mrs. Stephan Decatur Doar). Harriet Ann Gadsden married David Doar (1850-1928) and had a son, Thomas Screven Doar (1878-1951).
