Stow, Caroline Adalaide

Biography

Caroline was the daughter of Edward and Nancy Brewer Peck Stow of Boston. Edward worked as a merchant in Boston, where in 1793 he married Nancy Brewer Peck, sister of John Peck. Edward was also the subject of a portrait now in the NGA (1942.8.23). The Stowes had at least three daughters, Caroline Adalaide, Louise Matilda, and Ann Maria [later Mrs. George Phillips]. From 1798-1803 the Stow family lived in Philadelphia, where Edward worked as a clerk and served as agent for the artist Gilbert Stuart, who had left for Washington in 1803. The Stows were back in Boston by 1806. From 1813 until shortly before his death, Edward Stow was an officer of the New England Mississippi Land Company. Caroline Adalaide married George Hyatt, of Ithaca, NY. [Compiled from sources and references recorded on CMS]
