The comte de la Béraudière was one of the great French collectors of the nineteenth century. He inherited numerous works and added to his collection, housed both at the family château de Bouzillé near Angers as well as his two large Paris houses, from 1850-1880. He married Mademoiselle de Beaussier in 1843; she predeceased him. Following the comte's death in 1884, a large auction of the collection took place in Paris (18 May 1885). but nonetheless a significant portion of the collection passed on to the comte's son and subsequently his wife, Marie-Thérèse.
