Fennell, Maria

American, c. 1800 - 1880

Biography

Maria Fennell was the granddaughter of the artist Matthew Pratt, one of three daughters of the artist's daughter Mary (1771-1849) who married William Fennell. Maria is presumed to have inherited (with her sister Susan) at least two of her grandfather's paintings now in the NGA (1942.16.2 and 1944.17.1). At her death Maria bequeathed her share of the paintings to her niece Rosalie Valence Tiers Jackson (1852-1944), the daughter of her sister Anna Matilda (1809-1854) who in 1828 had married Arundius Tiers II (b. 1795).
