American, 1852 - 1944

Jackson, Charles P. Mrs.; Jackson, Rosalie Valence Tiers

Biography

Rosalie Valence Tiers was the great-granddaughter of the artist Matthew Pratt. Her mother, Anna Matilda, was one of three daughters of the artist's daughter Mary (1771-1849) who married William Fennell. Anna Matilda (1809-1854) married Arundius Tiers II (b. 1795) in 1828 and had at least two children, Rosalie and LaRue. Rosalie married Charles P. Jackson. She inherited from her aunt, Maria Fennell (c. 1800-1880), at least two of Pratt's paintings now in the NGA (1942.16.2 and 1944.17.1). Rosalie gave the paintings to her nephew Clarence Van Dyck Tiers (1869-1959), son of her brother LaRue, who donated them to the National Gallery of Art.
