Biography

The Montross Gallery was named after its founder and first director, Newman Emerson Montross (1849-1932). Beginning by representing leading American artists of its time, it opened in New York in 1878 and, after occupying several locations in the city, closed in 1942. During its later history, the gallery also represented European artists such as Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, and Man Ray.
