Bibesco, Antoine, Prince

Biography

Prince Antoine Bibesco was a Romanian diplomat. When stationed in London, he met and married Elizabeth Charlotte Lucy Asquith (1897-1945), daughter of former Prime Minister Herbert Asquith. The couple settled in Paris, the served in diplomatic posts in the United States (1921-1926) and Spain (1947-1931). during World War II they returned to his native Romania, where Elizabeth died in 1945. At the end of the war, Antoine left Romania. He died in 1951 in Paris and is buried there. Both he and his brother Prince Emmanuel (d. 1917) were friends and patrons of the artist Vuilllard.
