Martin Birnbaum began his career as an art dealer while working as a manager of the Berlin Photographic Co. in New York from 1910-1916. He later became a longtime partner in the art dealer firm of Scott & Fowles. The later part of his career was primarily focused on building the Grenville Lindall Winthrop Collection, now housed at the Fogg Museum in Cambridge, MA. A good portion of his career is documented in correspondence and business, legal and financial documents at the American Archives of Art.
