This image depicts a head-and-shoulders portrait of a person in a side profile. The person has a straight nose, full lips, and eyes looking forward. Their hair is wavy and frames the sides of the head. The subject wears a garment that appears to be a shirt or jacket, with subtle details blending into the background. The background is plain, rendered in reddish-brown tones on light, textured paper. No jewelry or objects are visible, and the paper's edges are slightly frayed.

Shown from the knees up, a young man with pale, peachy skin, wearing a black uniform and cap, leans against the back of a chair in this vertical portrait painting. He looks at us with pale blue eyes under sloping brows. He has an oval face, a rounded nose, and the corners of his closed mouth turn slightly down. His cap has a narrow, rounded, shiny black brim, a gold band around the crown, and a gold embellishment at the front center. The white collar of his shirt is visible along the neckline of his vest, which fastens with two lines of gold-colored buttons. His black jacket, also lined with gold buttons, hangs open. Braided gold ropes are looped under his arm from his right shoulder, to our left. More gold ropes hang down almost to his waist from that shoulder. He has a sky-blue and gold striped belt with a gold medallion at the front center over his vest. Gold bands encircle the wrists of both jacket sleeves, and his trousers are black. His right hand, to our left, rests against the back of the chair, with his palm facing away, and he leans that hip against those fingers. The chair has a coffee-brown back. He rests his other hand by his side, possibly on the hilt of a dagger or sword hanging from his far hip. The wall behind him is rust red.

The image shows a drawing of a person from the knees up, lying on their back with their head tilted to the side and arms resting at their sides. The person's facial features are soft, with closed eyes and a relaxed mouth, and their medium length, slightly wavy hair is visible. They are wearing a buttoned shirt with a high collar in earthy tones with hints of red and shading, depicted with a focus on capturing the folds and textures. The background is a light, solid color, emphasizing the figure's form and posture without any additional elements.

Edgar Degas · c. 1866 · black chalk and pastel on brown wove paper ·  Accession ID  1999.79.11

Shown from the chest up, a young, pale-skinned boy dressed in black turns to face us in this vertical portrait painting. His body is angled to our left, but he turns his head back to gaze at us from the corners of his large, hazel-brown eyes under thin arched brows. He has an upturned nose set in a round face, and his coral-red mouth is slightly open. His short dark brown hair is parted on the side and falls just below his ears. He wears a tall, oyster-white collar under a loose-fitting, black jacket tied with a black bow at the neck. The background is brownish-olive green.

Edgar Degas · 1855 · oil on canvas ·  Accession ID  1995.47.8

Shown from the knees up, a pale-skinned woman in a voluminous rust-orange dress stands facing us in this vertical portrait painting. She looks toward us but slightly down with dark brown eyes under curved brows. She has a wide face, rounded cheeks, a broad nose, and closed, coral-pink lips over a deeply dimpled chin. Her chestnut-brown hair is pulled up and back. The orange dress has a band of charcoal gray across the shoulders and at the flaring cuffs. Wide, vertical pleats fall from under the band across her chest. White trim, perhaps lace or fur, is suggested by loosely painted cream white at the high neck. The poofy sleeves and cinched cuffs of her white shirt extend beyond the dress sleeves. Her right arm, to our left, hangs by her side and the other holds an indistinct, loosely painted light-colored object down in front of her. She seems to be in a corner with the wall behind thinly washed in muted brown and green and a sienna-brown wood panel wall to our right.

The image shows parts of a person's body, focusing on two feet. The foot on the left appears to be partially covered by clothing near the ankle area, and its sole and toes are visible. On the right side, another foot is depicted in profile, showing the arch and toes drawn from the side view. The background is a plain, textured surface, appearing like a neutral drawing paper. There are no additional clothing, jewelry, or objects seen within the frame, and the background remains unobtrusive, serving only to highlight the drawn feet.
