Cargill, William A.

Scottish, died 1962

Biography

Both William A. Cargill and his brother David W.T. Cargill [1872-1939] were important Scottish collectors of Impressionism. Their wealth came through the Burmah Oil Company founded by their father. David's collection was better known to art historians and frequently lent to exhibitions. David donated paintings by Corot, Courbet and Seurat to the Glasgow Art Gallery c. 1941, but most of his collection was sold at auction in the late 1940s with the benefits going to a charitable fund in his name. William A. Cargill's collection was sold by his estate at Sotheby's, London, in 1963.
