Southam, Henry Stevenson

Biography

Canadian newspaper publisher Henry Stevensen Southam was the son of Willson Mills Southam, also a publisher who bought the Hamilton Spectator in 1877. Henry Stevenson Southam graduated from Toronto University in 1896 and started his career, which spanned over fifty years, shortly thereafter with the acquisition of the Ottawa Citizen. He retired from the paper in 1953. He married Lilias Ahearn in 1909, and had four childen. Southam served on the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Canada, and was twice its president. An exhibition of his collection, which included Canadian artists as welll as a significant assembly of paintings by 19th century European artists, was held at the National Gallery in Ottawa in 1944. He died in 1954.
