Leclanché, Georges

French, 1839 - 1882

Biography

Son of Léopold Leclanché and Eugénie de Villenueve engineer Georges Leclanché invented a battery which bears his name. He married in 1873 Gabrielle Larmes, with whom he had two children, Max-Georges [b. 1874] and Marianne [b. 1876]. A sale of George's collection of Renaissance objects d'art was held in Paris in 1882. George's brother Maurice [1847-1921] directed the business after his death. Maurice was a great friend and collector of the impressionists. Maurice's wife née Marie-Madeleine Petits-Courtois [1862-1924] donated a portrait of his mother by Diaz to the Louvre in 1922; the remainder of the collection was dispersed at auction in Paris on 6 November 1924.
