This is a painting of a colorful windmill. The tall windmill dominates the scene, positioned slightly to the right of center. Below is a horizontal strip of land painted in vertical and horizontal lines of green, yellow, blue, orange, purple, and white. The body of the windmill itself is painted in thick lines of white, yellow, and green, with blue shadows. The large blades of the windmill are suggested with lines of green, dark blue, and green, while the pointed roof is purple, black, and dark blue. The sky behind is a chaotic mix of shades of blue, including light blue, teal, blue-gray, and dark blue. Across the painting, the paint has been applied in thick, bold brushstrokes. Each brushstroke is visible, and different colors have been applied directly on top of one another, creating a swirling, fluid effect.

The Mill (at Goppeln)

Erich Heckel · 1907 · oil on canvas ·  Accession ID  2020.112.7

This painting depicts three individuals in a colorful interior. A man on the left is standing on steps that are coming up from below. He wears a green suit with a white shirt underneath it and holds a hat. His hair appears gray, and he's looking up at a woman standing at the top of the stairs. The woman is turned to the left, looking down at him, with her hands on top of the stair railing. She is wearing a blue striped dress and has short, dark hair. On the right, a man is seated on a patterned orange-and-blue sofa, holding something near his mouth and wearing a green suit. He is also facing the left, looking towards the stairs, and there is a small green window behind him. The people’s skin is painted in shades of pink, purple, and teal. The background of the image includes bold horizontal stripes of red and yellow, with some areas of green behind the man in the chair. The colors in the painting are bright and vibrant, and have been applied with thick, visible brushstrokes.

The image shows a rural scene with a tree on the left and a cluster of pumpkins or gourds under the tree. The horizon is visible in the distance, with structures faintly seen against the sky. The color palette is warm and muted with earthy tones. The brushwork is textured and soft, creating a gentle movement in the landscape.

The image features two figures in a sketch-like drawing with visible charcoal or pencil strokes. The person on the left occupies a significant portion of the composition, from the head down to the waist. This figure is in a frontal position with a slightly tilted head and prominent facial features such as thick eyebrows, deep-set eyes, and defined jawline, with short hair drawn with strong lines. The person is wearing what appears to be a shirt or tunic, based on broad strokes around the upper body. To the right, there is a second person, partially turned away and positioned slightly in the middle ground, with only the head and part of the torso visible. This person also has defined facial features and long hair. Surrounding the figures are abstract and loosely drawn elements, including what looks like a sketch of additional figures on the wall in the background. The background is filled with varied lines and shapes, hinting at window blinds or vertical elements, adding to the sketch's dynamic and layered aesthetic.

Self-Portrait in the Studio (Selbstbildnis im Atelier)

This image features bold, angular lines and geometric shapes in an abstract style. The shapes form the figures of two stylized human characters. One figure appears to be leaning over a surface with a rectangular object, while the other stands upright with a raised hand. The figures and text are in a black-and-purple color scheme, and the design is reminiscent of woodcut prints. The placement of text and figures suggests elements commonly associated with book cover designs or advertisements.

The artwork shows a full-body sketch of a person lying on their back with slightly bent knees. The person's head is turned to the side with one arm behind their head, displaying facial features like closed eyes and a relaxed expression. The hair seems short and tousled. The person appears unclothed with lines hinting at a blanket or sheets. The background displays a textured surface with pencil or sketch lines, creating an abstract environment around the figure. No jewelry or objects are visible.
