Mason, Jr., G. Grant

Biography

The son of George G. and Marion (Peak) Mason of New York, G. Grant was born in Mason City, Iowa. He received an A.B. from Yale in 1926, then studied at the New York University Guggenheim School of Aviation from 1926-27. In 1927, he married Jane Kendall. They had two children, Anthony and Philip, before their 1940 divorce. He remarried in 1946, to Martha Ashley McMakin (who had two children from a previous marriage). Mason had a long and active career dealing with aviation and financial concerns both in the military and in the private sector. He was one of the founders, then a representative of Pan Am Airways, Inc. for the Caribbean area, with headquarters in Havana (1927-38). From 1938-40, he was a member of the Civil Aeronautics Authority, serving on its board from 1940-42. Mason was chairman of the board for Versfelt, Mason & Donegan, Inc., financial services. President Roosevelt appointed him Chairman of the American Delegation to the 4th International Conference on Private Air Law in Brussels. He was named a Major in the Air Transport Commands, U.S. Army Air Force, in 1942, and earned a World War II Victory Medal. He held various other temporary assignments in connection with Air Transport Commands and later with problems of the postwar transition from military to civilian aviation. Mason was a Christian Scientist, a member of the Yale and Metropolitan Clubs, and a Trustee for the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. [Compiled from sources and references recorded on CMS]
