Katherine (Kate) Seney was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of banker George I. Seney and his wife, Phoebe Augusta Seney. On May 15, 1889, she married New York lawyer John Woodruff Simpson, who died in 1920. Their only child, Jean Walker Simpson, was born in 1897. They were active art collectors, and came to know the sculptor Auguste Rodin well. Mrs. Simpson was very active in promoting Rodin's work in the United States, and she and her husband acquired a large number of sculptures by the artist. Before her death in 1943, Mrs. Simpson gave many works to the NGA and other museums.
