Arthur Holdsworth, who came from a merchant family, was baptized on September 20, 1733. He married Rebecca Taylor of Denbury, Devon, on November 13, 1755. They had a son, also named Arthur, who later became a Member of Parliament for Dartmouth. Holdsworth was Governor of Dartmouth Castle, Devonshire, from 1760 to 1777. His wife having died in 1757, he married again, to a woman named Hannah.
