Biography

The youngest daughter of the 4th Earl of Minto, Lady Violet in 1909 married Lord Charles George Francis Mercer Nairne [1874-1914], second son of the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne. They had a son, George John Charles Mercer Nairne Petty-Fitzmaurice (later 8th Marquess of Lansdowne.) Widowed when Nairne was killed in WWI, she remarried in 1916 to John Jacob Astor, 1st Baron Astor of Hever [1886-1971]. Their three sons were Gavin (2nd Baron), Hugh Waldorf, and John. Lady Violet was a Dame of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
